What really is Coaching?
What do you think about when you hear the word "coaching"?
Most of us would think about an athletic coach like Nick Saban, Alabama's football coach, yelling at players, patting them on the bum or getting up in their grill when they mess up a play.
We are becoming more familiar with golf coaches who help Tiger Woods hit longer and straighter.
We hear about business coaches, voice coaches and life coaches.
Here is a simple way to think about coaching and what it is and what it is not.
Remember when you were learning how to ride a bike?
Let's define coaching by contrasting it with other types of people helping skills.
A Mentor would say…when I rode my bike I enjoyed riding around the neighborhood and feeling the wind in my hair.
A Consultant would say…what are the problems you are experiencing riding a bike and I will give you the solution to riding the bike better.
A Counselor would say… tell me about when you fell off the bike and what feelings did you have?
A Discipler would say… here is how to ride a bike. Put your feet on the pedals and push forward.
A Coach would say… where do you want to go and how can I help you get there?
Here is the definition that the International Coach Federation gives:
"Coaching is partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. It is an ongoing professional relationship that helps people produce extraordinary results in their lives, careers, businesses, or organizations.”
