What Makes a Leader?

What Makes a Leader? - Charles Hooper CoachingAs I have talked to people around the world about leadership, one common question arises: What makes a leader?

The question seems to come from self-doubt or a misunderstanding of leadership.  The desire to be validated as a leader could be behind this question.

I believe that leadership is primarily about influence.  Consider these statements as you reflect on your leadership:

  • If you are a friend, you have influence therefore, you are a leader.
  • If you are married, you have influence therefore, you are a leader.
  • If you are a parent, you have influence therefore, you are a leader.
  • If you are a citizen, you have influence therefore, you are a leader.
  • If you are employed, you have influence therefore, you are a leader.
  • If you employ others, you have influence therefore, you are a leader.
  • If you are a follower of Christ, you have influence therefore, you are a leader.
  • If you look behind you and there is at least one person following you, you are a leader.

I also believe that leadership is about integrity. When surveyed about the greatest quality of leadership, many would say integrity. Without integrity, there is usually not a positive influence.

The supreme quality for leadership is unquestionably integrity. Without it, no real success is possible, no matter whether it is on a section gang, a football field, in an army, or in an office.

~ Dwight D. Eisenhower

The powerful combination of integrity (character) and influence (relational intelligence) comes together to make a leader.

Think about this: What are the various relationships of influence you have in your life now?
